Problems Caused by Faulty Thermostats

Faulty Thermostats

Your thermostat plays a larger role than you think in your overall home comfort. With the touch of a screen you can control the temperature levels in your home and your family’s wellbeing. But what if your thermostat isn’t working? The thermostat is the gateway to your whole HVAC system. Without it working properly, you can’t optimize your home’s temperature levels; and even worse, it could be costing you a pretty penny in extra energy bills. Therefore, we’re sharing some of the problems caused by faulty thermostats.

Your HVAC System Won’t Turn On

The most obvious sign of a faulty thermostat is if your heater or air conditioner won’t turn on. Though your first thought might be that the entire system is broken, it could just be caused by a faulty thermostat. The first thing you should do it turn off the thermostat and turn it back on. If that doesn’t reset the system, you may have a larger problem on your hands. Chances are, the thermostat’s wiring is defective, therefore the unit completely unable to send proper commands to the entire system. In this case, you would need to call an HVAC technician to check the electrical wiring.

Your HVAC System Won’t Turn Off

On the flipside, if your HVAC system won’t turn off, that’s also a big problem. As we mentioned above, this could be a problem with faulty or defective wiring. Also, if your wiring is old and fraying, that could cause the HVAC system to be unresponsive when you want to turn it off.

The Thermostat Is Completely Unresponsive

Do you ever adjust the settings on your thermostat only to realize nothing is changing? This is a sure-fire sign you’re dealing with a faulty thermostat. Solving this problem could be as simple as changing the batteries or cleaning a dirty thermostat, or it could be as big as the electrical problems mentioned above. Either way, call an HVAC technician to diagnose the problem.

Home Air is Unevenly Distributed

Some a bit more subtle, but just as disruptive, is uneven air distribution. Do you ever go from one room to another and feel a difference in temperature? This could be caused by a faulty thermostat. Odd temperature shifts could be attributed to a faulty thermostat turning the whole HVAC system on and off, leading to an uneven distribution of treated air.

Improper Thermostat Placement

If you’re experiencing issues with your thermostat, they could be a result of improper placement. Though it may not seem like a big deal, the placement of your thermostat makes a huge different in your home comfort levels. Is your thermostat too close to a heat source? Is it on a wall that gets a lot of natural light? Both these placements could mean your thermostat isn’t reading the temperature correctly. Our HVAC technicians can look at your thermostat and tell you if it’s in the best location.
